TRAINER TREY WOOD SENDS OUT FASTEST SCHOOLING WINNER OF DAY WITH RICANELO; CONDITIONER WINS FIVE RACES ON DAY

OKLAHOMA CITY, OK – February 15, 2022 – The nine schooling races for non-starters for the upcoming American Quarter Horse-Paints-Appaloosas meet which begins March 3 were run into a stiff headwind all day long. Ricanelo won easily under wraps as jockey Tanner Thedford never asked the 2-year-old gray Quarter Horse for much. Despite little urging, the gelded son of Big Daddy Cartel, out of the Dean Miracle mare Total Miracle, drew away convincingly, winning the 250-yard race by two full lengths. His time for the race was :13.955 over a fast track, into a 25-mph headwind.

Ricanelo is owned by Tod and Gene Bradley and trained by Trey Wood and is the son of current leading Quarter Horse sire in the country, Big Daddy Cartel. He is by far the top producer of horses according to money earned in 2022. His progeny have earned $646,921. The sire in second, First Moonflash’s runners have made $309,895.

Big Daddy Cartel stands at MJ Farms in Veguita, N.M. and has a stud fee of $5,500. His top runner this year is Wente, who is 2-for-2 in 2022. Wente has earned $128,529 in those two starts. The 3-year-old New Mexico-bred 3-year-old gray gelding won his Shue Fly Stakes trial on Jan. 7 and then won the stakes on Jan. 29 by a nose with a 95 speed index.

Because of the brisk, gusting wind Tuesday, Ricanelo only managed a 65 speed index, compared to last week’s fastest training race winners posting an 81 for a high on Wednesday and a 73 on Wednesday. Those two winners were boosted by a tailwind those days. This win was just as impressive. Breaking sharply from the gate, Ricanelo did everything on his own as Thedford settled in for an easy score. It was apparent from the time Ricanelo was walked over from the barns, with a beautiful prowess in the paddock and post parade, that he might be something special. He proved that on the track a few minutes later. Temperature for his race was 67 degrees.

Training races were moved up a day earlier this week due to expected winter weather on Thursday, Feb. 17. Another eight training races are set for Wednesday morning, starting at 11am.

Racing at Remington Park this meet is scheduled to run a Thursday-Saturday schedule at 6 p.m. nightly and Sunday at 4 p.m. Special start times include Kentucky Derby Day (May 7) and Preakness Stakes Day (May 21) when Remington Park action begins at Noon. The Champions’ Night program on May 28 will begin at 5pm. All times are Central.
