TOXIC RELATIONSHIP RETURNS TO HER WINNING WAYS IN FEATURED ALLOWANCE AT REMINGTON PARK

OKLAHOMA CITY, OK — March 24, 2023 – Last year, Toxic Relationship was making quite a name for herself among 3-year-old filly American Quarter Horses as she was the fastest qualifier for the $461,000 All American Oaks at Ruidoso Downs, N.M., winning her fourth race in a row.

Toxic Relationship was beginning to look a lot like her half-brother, 2021 AQHA World Champion Danjer, while making her run her first huge stakes event. The next two races, the All American Oaks and a derby trial at Los Alamitos were easily the worst races of her short career, but she got back to her winning ways Friday night at Remington Park against allowance company. She ran 10^th and fifth, respectively in her two losses and then was laid off by owner-trainer Dean Frey from Oct. 16 last fall until her effort Friday night.

The time off did her good as she finished like a whirlwind to win by a head at generous 3-1 odds and paid $8.60 to win, $5.60 to place and $4 to show. Three-time AQHA World Champion jockey James Flores booted this 4-year-old mare by Fly Thru the Fire, out of the same dam as Danjer, Shez Jess Toxic, a daughter of Take Off Jess.

A couple of longshots checked in for second and third as 9-5 favorite Jess Call Me Candy was caught leaning when the gate opened. At Ruidoso last year, Jess Call Me Candy ran a neck behind Toxic Relationship in the third of her first four wins in an allowance race there.

Toxic Relationship earned $14,409 from the Friday night allowance purse of $25,800 and improved her record to seven starts, five wins and a bankroll of $50,511.

The 2023 Remington Park American Quarter Horse, Paint and Appaloosa Season continues Saturday when the first post time is 6 p.m. The program of 12 races, including the 82^nd renewal of the Grade 2, $533,270 Oklahoma Futurity, features eight stakes events on a card worth more than $1.2 million in total purses. This edition of the Oklahoma Futurity is the richest in the history of the race. It has been conducted at Remington Park every spring since 2006. The race is the longest-running futurity in American Quarter Horse racing, first held in 1947.

Piano Man Sam, the top qualifier throughout 17 trials for the Oklahoma Futurity on March 11, has been made the 3-1 morning-line favorite.
