TOP WIN PERCENTAGE TRAINER, JUAN DIAZ, JR. and FASTEST QUALIFIER JOOSE BOXX, LIVE UP TO BILLING IN OKLAHOMA FUTURITY
by Richard Linihan
OKLAHOMA CITY, OK – March 23, 2024 – When Joose Boxx came out on the track for the Grade 2, $502,385 Oklahoma Futurity at Remington Park he would have won the beauty contest. A few minutes later he would win the race.
The 2-year-old gelded son of Kiss My Hocks, out of the Big Daddy Cartel mare CD Daddys Home, is a beautiful, dappled gray and was on his toes and prancing to the gate under jockey Nestor Duran. When he broke on top in the 300-yard race, he was a mere gray blur from start to finish and was in front comfortably at the wire by three-quarters of a length. He covered the 300 yards on a fast track in :15.542 for an 88 speed index.
Joose Boxx went off as the 5-2 wagering favorite for the meet’s top winning percentage trainer, Juan Diaz, Jr., for conditioners with at least 10 starters this meet. His futurity win made him 4-for-12 at the meet for 33 percent winners. The closest to him with that many starters minimum is John Stinebaugh’s 29 percent (5-for-17).
“We expected this of him,” said Diaz. “We thought he had a lot more than he showed in his trial.”
Duran called him a “pretty good horse,” in his post-win interview and Diaz took some umbrage to that statement.
“I don’t think Nestor gave this horse enough credit,” said Diaz. “We have him paid up in the Heritage Place Futurity, so we will see him again here.”
Owner Javier De Los Santos Muzquiz of San Antonio, Texas, pocketed $200,954 with the trip to the winner’s circle. Joose Boxx is undefeated after two starts and has a bankroll of $206,738. He was bred in Texas by Gerry Lynn Sigman and Diane Tatum.
This was the first Oklahoma Futurity win for all of the connections of Joose Boxx.
Joose Boxx was made the favorite at post-time by the betting public and paid $7 to win, $3.80 to place and $2.60 to show across the board. Xpress Lane (7-1 odds) was beaten three-quarters of a length and was a neck ahead of third-place finisher Finn McOol (3-1), who was beaten only a head by Joose Boxx in the trials.
The remaining order of the finish had Cowboy Blue Z (5-2) fourth, followed by Miss Perrys Cowgirl (4-1) fifth, Billie Blues Girl (17-1) sixth and AJK Viejo Titan (10-1) seventh. Three qualifiers for the finals scratched before the races Saturday night – Ihearthetrainarollin, Evidenz and Liberty for Jess (20-1).
The Oklahoma Futurity is the longest-running futurity in American Quarter Horse racing, with the 83rdedition now in the books. The race was first contested in 1947.
