STABLEMATES SAN LORENZO IVORY, PYC AVENUE DEAD-HEAT FOR WIN IN $973,665 REMINGTON PARK FUTURITY

OKLAHOMA CITY, OK – April 18, 2022 – San Lorenzo Ivory was by far the fastest qualifier in the trials for the restricted Grade 1, $973,665 Remington Park Futurity, but PYC Avenue put on his running shoes Saturday night and managed to dead-heat for victory with his stablemate.

San Lorenzo Ivory took the scenic route from his outside post-position, lugging in and lugging out during the race, but when all was said and done he caught PYC Avenue at the finish. After review of the photo-finish image, it was determined that there was no separation of their noses, putting the dead-heat for the win into play.

Both San Lorenzo Ivory and PYC Avenue hail from the barn of leading trainer Santos Carrizales, Jr. San Lorenzo Ivory was ridden by Remington Park top jock Juan Pulido and PYC Avenue crossed the finish line under rider Bryan Candanosa. Leading owner Josefina Guzman of Dallas, Texas, owns PYC Avenue and Rogelio Marquez, Jr., of Rosenberg, Texas, is the owner of San Lorenzo Ivory, the 7-5 betting favorite.

It was the first win of the Remington Park Futurity for both jockeys. San Lorenzo Ivory had the most circuitous journey, weaving in and out three or four post positions before hitting the wire.

“This race was a little complicated,” said Pulido afterwards. “I hit him with the left hand and he lugged out, so I hit him with the right hand and he lugged in. I’m just glad it worked out well in the end. We learned a lot from this race.”

Candanosa was worried about his horse breaking well after a long delay when Lota Hot Mess scratched late, causing his own problems with fractious behavior in the gate. The horses were all backed out of the gate and then reloaded.

“There was a lot of trouble in the gates,” Candanosa said. “I think my horse stood in the gate the longest because we were the first ones loaded in. He handled it like a champ. But then after going back in, I really didn’t expect him to break well.”

Candanosa underestimated his mount as PYC Avenue blew to the front like a Florida hurricane at landfall and was the one to catch the whole way in the 330-yard race. The Carrizales pair hit the wire in :16.669 over the fast track for a speed index of 95. PYC Avenue went off at 10-1 odds.

Another Carrizales horse, Eye On the Card finished third in the race at 6-1 odds. That colt is owned by Omar Hernandez of Idaho Falls, Idaho. With those horses running 1-2-3, the Carrizales barn earned $662,093 for their owners – $277,495 to each winner and $107,103 for third place. Jockey Francisco Calderon was aboard the third-place finisher, who was a half-length back of the dead-heat.

San Lorenzo Ivory, a 2-year-old gelding by Ivory James, out of the Heza Fast Man mare Ashleys Gold Digger, improved his record to two wins in three starts and a second for earnings of $289,939. The gelding, bred in Oklahoma by Charlotte and Brett Northam, was purchased by Marquez for $52,000 at the Heritage Place September Yearling Sale last fall.

PYC Avenue is now an undefeated three-time winner with a bankroll of $299,421. This gelded son of PYC Fun and Fancy, out of the Towson Avenue mare Go Paloma Go (TB), was bred in Oklahoma by Jose Guzman and Jose Acosta. It was Candanosa’s first time in the saddle of this horse. Pulido had his choice of the two horses. He qualified both in their trials. This winner paid $8.20 to win, $9.60 to place and $5.20 to show. San Lorenzo Ivory returned $3, $3.20 and $2.80.

The remaining order of finish in the Remington Park Futurity, the richest race of the season to this point, was Mitey Like A Rose (4^th) Apollitical Face (5^th), Cartel Kisses (6^th), Jess Angel Blood (7^th), A Southern Hero (8^th) and Kiss of Valor (9^th).
