SASSALITICAL GETS HER NECK IN FRONT TO CONTINUE TRAINER CLINT CRAWFORD’S, JOCKEY JORGE TORRES’ MULTIPLE WINS IN DECKETTA
OKLAHOMA CITY, OK – March 25, 2023 – Coming into Saturday night’s races at Remington Park, trainer Clint Crawford and jockey Jorge Torres had practically owned the Decketta Stakes. Nothing changed. They won it again, this time with Sassalitical.
After the upset with their 4-year-old mare in this year’s edition, Crawford had five Decketta wins and Torres had four. They love this race. This year, Sassalitical at 13-1 odds, won the Grade 2, $51,840 Decketta Stakes by a neck for owners Tyler and Naia Graham of Elgin, Texas.
Fabulous Rachel (4-1) got up for second and was another nose in front of third-place finisher Sheza Freighttrain T (3-1). The 9-5 wagering favorite, Pops First Lady, ran fourth.
In Saturday’s Decketta, Sassalitical covered the 350 yards in :17.322 on a fast track for a speed index of 99. She didn’t break well in fifth, but she closed like a bear to pay $28.80 to win, $9.20 to place and $5.20 to show.
Sassalitical pocketed $29,730 and improved her record to 14 starts, four wins, five wins, and one third for $208,583. She was bred in Utah by Speed LLC and is a daughter by Apollitical Jess from the Mr Jess Perry mare Jess Sass Me.
Crawford’s other Decketta wins were 2016 with Candy Cartels Cat, 2015 with This Candys Awesome, 2012 with Candy Cartel, and 2011 with Fredaville. Torres won the Decketta with Curls Happy Wagon two years in a row for trainer Stacy Charette-Hill in 2019-2020. He also helped Charette-Hill to the winner’s circle in 2018 with Jess Paint Your Lips.
The race is named in honor of the 1964 All American Futurity winner who was born in Blanchard, Okla. and campaigned by her breeder, owner and trainer W.W. Wilson. Decketta was a successful broodmare for over 20 years after her racing career was completed.
The 2023 Remington Park American Quarter Horse, Paint and Appaloosa Season continues Sunday with 11 races scheduled. Post time is 4 p.m.
