RGS GOLD WAGON HAD ALL WHEELS ROLLING DOWNHILL, WINNING JACK BROOKS STAKES
OKLAHOMA CITY, OK – May 27, 2023 – RGs Gold Wagon ran like fool’s gold in the $190,000 Remington Park Derby in April, but all the wheels on this 3-year-old gelding were greased and rolling downhill Saturday as he regrouped to win the $54,750 Jack Brooks Stakes at Remington Park.
The 3-year-old gelding’s derby run was the worst race on his form in his career, finishing eighth, beaten 2-1/2 lengths, two full lengths behind runner-up Defours. Defours went off as the 3-1 second favorite in Saturday night’s Jack Brooks and RGs Gold Wagon was 5-1. The two battled to the finish and it was the latter that held on for a half-length victory. It was the first win in this stakes series for all connections of the gelded son of Prized Wagon, out of the Gol mare JA Gols Debutante – jockey Cordarelton Benn, trainer Steve Jordan and owner Mauricio Garza of Mission, Texas.
Defours checked in second, a neck ahead of Rock On (17-1) in third. The 2-1 post-time favorite, Remington Park Oaks winner Kool N Foxy could do no better than fourth.
“He ran phenomenal just like we planned,” said Benn. “It just goes to show you that hard work equals perfection. He got right to it and handled his business.”
Jordan said he had a feeling that he was going to run a big race Saturday.
“He’s finally coming into form and he was really sharp today at vet check,” Jordan said.
The winning time for RGs Gold Wagon was :17.394 for 350 yards on a fast track for a high speed index for the day of 97. He earned $30,450 from the purse and improved his record to 15 starts, five wins, three seconds and two thirds for $266,474. He was bred in Oklahoma by Roy Garza. He had a prior sharp win in the $306,000 Evangeline Downs Futurity in Louisiana on Dec. 16 last year.
As classy as this horse is, oddly enough it was his first win in nine tries at Remington Park. He had run second or third five times in Oklahoma City.
The Jack Brooks Stakes is named after the legendary trainer from Blanchard, Okla. who retired in 2007. Brooks led the Remington Park trainer standings three times in his career, adding that local accomplishment to his eight wins in the All American Futurity, the pinnacle for 2-year-old racing American Quarter Horses. Brooks, a multiple Hall of Famer, was on-hand to present the stakes trophy to the winning connections.

A message from Dr.Heidlage: For the final weekend of races there is an over abundance of haul ins each day. I would appreciate your cooperation in arriving early to the haul in barn. Both the Cherokee barn and D1 will have to be used. Anyone assigned stalls in D1 will need to be in place by 8 am. Anyone in the Cherokee barn has to be in their assigned stalls by 9 am not on your way to the stall. If you arrive at the stable gate at 9 am you will be considered late and subject to fines or scratches. This will be the largest number of horses in per card for the entire meet. Please keep this in mind. We will all have to make concessions to make this work. Jock agents please make your haul in trainers aware of this. Thank you. ... ’Expand’See Less
