PJ SPLASH OF JOY POWERS HOME A 13-1 UPSET WINNER IN $54,200 EASY DATE STAKES
OKLAHOMA CITY – April 18, 2020 – PJ Splash of Joy made her debut at Remington Park a winning one, winning the $54,200 Easy Date Stakesat 13-1 odds. The Easy Date was for fillies and mares, three and older, at 350 yards.
Jockey Ricky Ramirez guided this 4-year-old mare home to a full-length win over runner-up Splendid Cause (14-1). Americas Dynasty (14-1) was a head further back in third. The 6-5 betting favorite, Curls Happy Wagon, checked in fourth another head back. The runners from second place to ninth in this race were separated by heads and noses in a true blanket finish.
Ramirez rode for Monty Arrossa, who is training horses at Remington Park for the first time in his illustrious career. The owner of PJ Splash of Joy is Valeriano Racing Stables of Odessa, Texas. She was bred in California by Fredda Draper.
PJ Splash of Joy is a daughter of First Moonflash, out of the Genuine Strawfly mare Jenuine Joy. She earned her respect in the morning line at 4-1 odds, but the public let her drift up to 13-1. She won $30,276 for the triumph in the Easy Date, providing a first-time victory for all the connections in this race.
The Easy Date Stakes is named after the 1974 All American Futurity winner and 1975 American Quarter Horse World Champion who was bred, owned and trained by Walter Merrick of Sayre, Okla.
The winner stopped the clock in :17.556 for an 89 speed index over the fast track. Her career record improved to 13 starts, four wins, one second and one third for a bankroll of $133,412. At the long odds, she paid $28.60 to win, $14.80 to place and $9 to show. With the other two longshots behind her, the $2 exacta was worth $413.60 and the 50-cent trifecta was worth $1,152.15. Even with heavily-favored Curls Happy Wagon in fourth, the 10-cent superfecta was good for a $1,369.64 payout.
Racing is scheduled to continue, with no public spectators, with Sunday’s 10-race card on tap with a new post time of 6 p.m. (Central) for the first race.
