OWNER TOM MAHER SURGES TO TOP OF STANDINGS WITH TWO WINS FROM TWO TRAINERS TO JUMP OUT OF LOGJAM AT TOP
OKLAHOMA CITY – Longtime attorney and horse owner from Pierre, S.D., surged to the top of the owner standings at Remington Park with two wins from two different trainers on Saturday night.
Maher won race three with AP Dynasty, trained by Jason Olmstead, and then again in race nine with Love This Heart, conditioned by Tyler Stein. Maher entered the night with four wins, one behind leader Bryan Hawk, but the two victories moved him to the top of the owner standings after 21 race dates this season.
Maher has been in racing for 48 years, but never really achieved stardom until 2014, his 39th year in the business. That’s the year that Hes Relentless was named the American Quarter Horse Association’s Champion 3-year-old colt, owned by Maher, his brother Bill and R.D. Hubbard.
Hes Relentless, as a 3-year-old, set the track record for 350 yards at Remington Park on May 31, 2014, winning by an amazing two lengths in :16.982. He also ran second as the even-money favorite in the 2013 Grade 1, $910,260 Heritage Place Futurity, losing by a head to 29-1 longshot Big Biz Perry, and was third a year later in the 2014 $1 million Rainbow Derby. The champion horse from the Dash For Cash bloodlines finished his career with eight wins from 15 starts for $616,380 in earnings. He was easily the best horse of Maher’s career.
Maher has had 2,760 Quarter Horse starters as an owner, winning 376 times, running second 392 times and third another 337 times for earnings of $3,487,076 lifetime.
The Remington Park owner standings after Saturday’s racings were as follows:
Tom Maher, six wins
Bryan Hawk, five wins
4-way tie with 4 wins, Double A Ranch, Brenda Reiswig, Regina Laymon and Gerardo Arroyo
Jockeys Edwin Escobedo and Roman Cruz were the winners aboard Maher’s horses on Saturday night, riding for Olmstead and Stein, respectively. The two riders are in a heated battle for the top spot among the jockey colony. Escobedo had two wins Saturday as did Cruz and Raul Valenzuela. The jockey standings are as follows going into Extreme Racing Day on Sunday at 4 p.m. when ostriches, zebras, camels, pigs and Clydesdales invade Remington Park for some fun and games:
Cruz, 18 wins
Escobedo, 16
Juan Pulido, 14
Francisco Calderon, 13
3-way tie with 12 wins: James Flores, Eugenio Navarette and Gonzalo Gutierrez
