OSC IS ON FIRE PROVES FAVORITISM CORRECT, WINNING VICTORIA ENNIS MEMORIAL AT REMINGTON PARK
by Richard Linihan
OKLAHOMA CITY, OK – April 29, 2024 – OSC Is On Fire finally got away from the undefeated Wire Transfer and proved the public’s backing of him Sunday was well deserved in winning the $22,000 Victoria Ennis Memorial Stakes for 2-year-old Paints and Appaloosas.
Wire Transfer won two futurity trials and the Oklahoma Paint and Appaloosa Futurity finals to stamp her mark as the top 2-year-old Paint on the grounds in her first three starts for trainer Matt Whitekiller. Unfortunately for OSC Is On Fire, he had the unfortunate luck of running in the same trial as Wire Transfer for the Oklahoma Paint and Appaloosa Futurity and only lost to that brilliant filly by a head. This 2-year-old Paint colt by Highest Fire (QH), out of the Jess Lips (QH) mare CL Oooh Sexy Lips, ran third to Wire Transfer in the finals, but couldn’t get closer than 1-1/4 lengths this time.
Facing the toughest prepared OSC Is On Fire for his third start and he broke his maiden by winning the Victoria Ennis by a head as the 8-5 wagering favorite at 330 yards. He got his head just in front of runner-up Readi to the Wire (6-1) at the finish line. Chief Iron Eagle (7-1) ran third, another head back of Readi to the Wire.
Jockey Nestor Duran shipped in for the mount on the winner for trainer Juan Diaz, Jr., and owner Rogelio Sandoval of San Antonio, Texas. It was the first win for all connections in this stakes series. Sandoval earned $11,730 from the purse and his maiden-breaker improved to three starts, one win, one second and one third for $35,373 in lifetime earnings.
OSC Is On Fire stopped the timer in :16.938 over a sealed and sloppy track for an 85 speed-index. He paid $5.40 to win, $3.40 to place and $3 to show across the board. The winner was bred in Oklahoma by Wade and/or Susan Leggett.
The order of finish past the top three were Chromed Up Annie (19-1) fourth, Back Spin (7-1) fifth, If I Was a Cowboy (5-1) sixth, ZT Rocky (16-1) seventh, El Gran Martino (6-1) eighth, Linda Cartel (18-1) ninth and PT Rex (26-1) 10th.
Remington Park will present a special program of racing on Monday, April 29, featuring the six stakes races postponed on April 27 due to weather. The stakes events are led by the $854,000-plus Remington Park Futurity. The first race on Monday is at 1pm-Central.
