MISTER LEWIE MEMORIAL CHOCK FULL OF MULTIPLE STAKES WINNERS, SOUTHERN ELECTRIC THE MORNING-LINE FAVORITE
OKLAHOMA CITY, OK – May 14, 2021 – Nine of the toughest Paints and Appaloosas line up Friday night to determine which star of that genre is the true superstar as Remington Park runs the 16th edition of the Grade 1, $30,000 Mister Lewie Memorial Stakes.
The nine horses have combined for 31 wins at Remington Park, so this should be a firecracker of a race. An indication of that is the favorite, Southern Electric, is a lukewarm 5-2 in the morning line and in the last year has finished behind a competitor in this field at higher odds three times. In the 2020 Mister Lewie, Memories of Lil Hero won, but Live Moonshine ran second, three-quarters of a length ahead of Southern Electric. Live Moonshine has been installed at 6-1 in this year’s race due to a lackluster performance in the $20,000 Paul Harber Stakes, won by Southern Electric on April 9 this year. Live Moonshine was the 2-1 favorite in that race, so it will be interesting to watch how the betting public backs those two.
Southern Electric’s record at Remington Park is 11 starts, six wins, one second and two thirds for $140,107 earned here. The 4-year-old gelding has won 12-of-20 overall for $246,821 in his bankroll. He is second in lifetime earnings in this race, only behind Bully Pulpit’s $261,158. Bully Pulpit is 8-1 in the morning line. That’s how tough this race is. Bully Pulpit has raced 29 times with 13 wins, eight seconds and two thirds. Live Moonshine is 12-for-22 lifetime with $192,389 in his wallet.
We haven’t even talked about the second favorite in the morning line, Mammy Jammer (9-2 odds). She is two-for-five at Remington Park with $33,975 in earnings here, coming off a victory in the Grade 1, $35,550 American Paint Stakes. Of the nine starters that have been drawn for the Mister Lewie, seven are stakes winners. Live Moonshine and Southern Electric are the most prolific winners with five stakes victories each since 2019. Bully Pulpit and Mammy Jammer have three each in that same time frame.
Trainer Matt Whitekiller is tied with Eddie Lee Willis and Brandon Parum with the most wins in the Mister Lewie, a race named for the man so many still consider the greatest Paint and Appaloosa trainer of all time, Lewis Wartchow. Whitekiller, Eddie Lee Willis and Parum all have two wins apiece in the race. It would not be surprising to see Whitekiller in the winner’s circle again as he conditions three of the top favorites for this race – Southern Electric, Live Moonshine and Bully Pulpit, all multiple stakes winners.
Here’s a look at the field from the rail out, including jockey, trainer and odds:
Live Moonshine (Paint), Cody Smith, Matt Whitekiller, 6-1
Live racing continues this week with a Friday-Sunday schedule, May 14-16. The first race is at 6pm nightly, except for Saturday, May 15 when Remington Park features a Noon start time, along with the simulcast of the Preakness Stakes. All times are Central.

The Oklahoma Quarter Horse Racing Association (OQHRA) has confirmed the detection of Olodaterol through pre-entry hair testing protocols required for participation at Oklahoma racetracks. Olodaterol is a long-acting beta2-adrenergic agonist, a class of bronchodilators that includes strictly prohibited substances such as clenbuterol, albuterol, and carmoterol.
Olodaterol is not an approved substance in racehorses, and its presence constitutes a violation of integrity standards. The positive findings were made as a condition of entry through OQHRA-managed hair testing, not by the regulatory body, and as such, horses testing positive were ruled ineligible for entry.
While reports of Olodaterol have surfaced in other states through hair samples, OQHRA is not currently aware of any confirmed positives in blood or urine samples. This reinforces the value of hair testing in identifying substances that may otherwise go undetected.
“This is a clear example of why hair testing matters,” said Krissy Bamberg, Executive Director of OQHRA. “Whether used pre-entry to prevent horses from competing, or post-race for official adjudication, hair testing provides a longer detection window and a clearer picture of the medications and substances a horse has been exposed to.”
OQHRA will continue to support and expand the use of hair testing as part of its integrity and welfare program. In addition, the association will continue to advocate for the Oklahoma Horse Racing Commission to adopt hair testing as a standard matrix within the state’s official biological testing program. This includes both post-race testing and out-of-competition testing.
“We strongly encourage the Commission to expand its use of hair testing,” said Bamberg. “It's a reliable, science-based tool that gives regulators the ability to detect long-term exposure to prohibited substances and strengthens our ability to ensure fairness and safety in the sport.”
OQHRA and our partner racetracks remain committed to identifying and deterring the use of new and emerging substances and protecting the integrity of racing in Oklahoma. ... ’Expand’See Less

Why don’t you just require hair testing in test barn of top 2 finishers. Wouldn’t that be a more accurate chance to catch abuse?
You don’t find it in blood and urine because hair testing is highly variable and substances can last for years after it’s been administered.
Felipe Martinez this what you Ben saying all along
The Louisiana Racing Commission STILL does not recognize the hair testing we owners have been paying for the last few years!
Guess you missed the news from LA??
