LONGSHOTS RULE IN MR JET MOORE STAKES WITH TRAINER KENNY LAYMON BRINGING HOME TOP TWO; WINNER WAS HOOKED ON A WIN
OKLAHOMA CITY – April 4, 2020 – Trainer Kenny Laymon’s horses finished first and second in the restricted-Grade 2, $59,000 Mr Jet Moore Stakes on Thursday night at Remington Park and both were at huge boxcar odds.
The winner, Hooked On a Win, went off at 34-1 odds and the runner-up, JK Wildcat Red, was 26-1. That Laymon duo paid $561.20 in the $2 exacta. Hooked On a Win paid $70 to win, $28.20 to place and $11 to show. His two, both owned by his wife, Regina Laymon, had to beat a field that included four entries by trainer Blane Wood, including the heavy 2-5 favorite Apollitical Pence who stumbled badly at the start and never had a chance, running fourth.
“Regina and I were at home watching on TV (in Neosho Falls, Kan.),” said Kenny. “Regina got a little excited and hollered a little bit.”
Hooked on a Win stopped the timer at 350 yards in :17.434 over the fast surface for a 93 speed index. The two bombs keyed some four-figure payoffs in the race: the 50-cent trifecta with Tough to Bee (6-1) in third was worth $2,156.65; the 10-cent superfecta with the favorite fourth paid $1,042.57 and the 50-cent Pick 3 returned $1,246.70.
“Them two horses can handle themselves,” said Laymon. “We worked on Hooked On a Win’s hocks and it woke him up.”
The winner finished three-quarters of a length ahead of his stablemate, who was another half-length ahead of Tough to Bee. Hooked On a Win was ridden victory by Juan Pulido. The 5-year-old gelding by PYC Paint Your Wagon, out of the Pretty Boy Perry mare Pretty Girl Kate, was bred in Oklahoma by JK Running Horses.
Hooked On a Win earned $33,600 for first and improved lifetime to 21 starts, seven wins, one second and five thirds for $157,919.
Racing is scheduled to continue with Friday’s 10-race card on tap, all Remington Park Futurity trials. There will be no carryover in the Sooner 6ix as one ticket paid out $50,252.72 as the only bettor to correctly hit six-of-six. The sequence in the Pick 6 wager was Luchador (9-5) in the fourth race, Card One Starter (even-money) in the fifth, Devil of Ramadi (30-1) or Cash for Willie (6-1) a dead heat in the sixth, Let There Be Sound (even-money) in the seventh, Hooked On a Win (34-1) in the eighth and Apollitical J Twin 1 (5-1 in the ninth).
The first race Friday is at 6pm-Central.
