LIVEWIRES TURNPIKE WINS GRADE 1 SPEEDHORSE GRAHAM PAINT AND APPALOOSA STAKES, HIS 8TH WIN IN 11 STARTS
OKLAHOMA CITY, OK — March 25, 2023 – Livewires Turnpike, a monster of a Paint racehorse, put trainer Matt Whitekiller back into the winner’s circle for the Grade 1, $35,000 Speedhorse Graham Paint and Appaloosa Stakes, giving him his third win in the series. The race was the first of eight stakes races on Saturday, March 25 at Remington Park.
Livewires Turnpike, a 3-year-old black and white gelded son of CRM Livewire, out of the PYC Paint Your Wagon (QH) mare Wagon On Turnpike, has proven virtually that he cannot be beaten on the track these days. The stakes win was his fifth victory in a row and his eighth trip to the winner’s circle in 11 lifetime races.
Jockey Francisco Calderon rode the winner with confidence, never asking him to run, and just let him do his thing. Livewires Turnpike drew off to victory by 1-1/2 lengths at 350 yards, breaking third from the gate, but immediately taking the lead before the blink of an eye. He was sent off the heavy wagering favorite at 1-5 odds by the betting public and paid $2.40 to win, $2.60 to place and $2.10 to show.
Livewires Turnpike earned $20,784 for owner Bryan Hawk of Shawnee, Okla., who took the lead in the owners standings with this victory. Livewires Turnpike improved his career record to 11 starts, eight wins and two thirds for a bankroll of $147,702.
His winning time at the 350 yards was :17.450, good for a 96 speed index. The runner-up Zbars Livewire FS (26-1) mustered up an 89 speed index and he finished a nose ahead of third-place runner Salt Wire (9-1).
Whitekiller also won this race in 2020 with Southern Electric and in 2016 with multiple World Champion Painted Turnpike. It was the first win in the stakes series for Calderon and Hawk. Livewires Turnpike was bred in Oklahoma by Nolan Pevehouse.
The 2023 Remington Park American Quarter Horse, Paint and Appaloosa Season continues Sunday with 11 races scheduled. Post time is 4 p.m.
