KINGPYN, THIRD-HIGHEST PRICED SALE HORSE OF DAY, RECORDS FASTEST THURSDAY TRAINING RACE AT REMINGTON PARK
OKLAHOMA CITY – February 15, 2024 – Kingpyn, a 2-year-old American Quarter Horse colt by Favorite Cartel, recorded the fastest time of 13 training races Thursday at Remington Park.
The son of Favorite Cartel, out of the Corona Cartel mare Bovet, stopped the timer in the fifth race of the day, in :13.590 seconds with the temperature hovering at 53 degrees, sprinted the 250 yards with a tailwind of 5 mph at his back. He was purchased at the Heritage Place Quarter Horse Yearling Sale in Oklahoma City last fall for $150,000 by Francisco Robles. He was the third-highest priced sales horse on the tab Thursday. Only FDD Dynastasia ($200,000) in the 13th race and Hott Temptation ($190,000) in the fourth race were sold for higher prices on Thursday’s card.
Three-time title-winning jockey James Flores was aboard the fastest training race winner for trainer Pedro Hernandez-Pulido. Flores won the riding title at Remington Park in 2019, 2020 and 2021 before being dethroned in 2022 by Francisco Calderon and, last year, finishing second to Edwin Escobedo. Flores’ 61 wins in 2020 is ninth highest for one meet in Remington’s history books behind the top eight set by Oklahoma Horse Racing Hall of Famer G.R. Carter. His $1,721,973 earned at that 2020 meet is the fourth-most all time by a jockey, behind the top three marks set by Carter.
Kingpyn won by three-quarters of a length over Having a Sweet Dream, who was another nose ahead of Turbito in third place.
It’s no surprise that Kingpyn looks like a runner. He is a grandson of the late Corona Cartel, who was the leading broodmare sire of 2023 and was the second all-time sire of money earners in his career at stud. In Corona Cartel’s racing career, he won the Grade 1 Los Alamitos Million Futurity in California. At the time of his death in 2019, Corona Cartel’s progeny had earned more than $62 million on the track. He also sired 2005 All American Futurity winner Teller Cartel.
Kingpyn’s actual sire, Favorite Cartel, was an American Quarter Horse Association Champion Sire and a leading sire of money earners. In his racing career, he won 9-of-25 races for $607,669 earned. Among Favorite Cartel’s top runners in most recent years was Trane Station V, who earned $1,754,152 on the racetrack in 2023. Trane Station V won 6-of-9 lifetime, including winning the last four starts of his career, two of them in Grade 1 company. He won the Grade 1 Golden State Million Futurity and the Los Alamitos 2 Million Futurity last year in California.
The other training race winners on Thursday (Quarter Horses unless otherwise noted), their times (in order from fastest to slowest winners), speed index, trainers and race number were:
