JB KOOL JESS PUTS UP FAST TIME IN FIRST TRIAL TO TOP THURSDAY NIGHT QUALIFYING FOR REMINGTON PARK FUTURITY
OKLAHOMA CITY, OK — April 6, 2023 – JB Kool Jess remained undefeated after two starts, putting up a blazing fast time in the first of 10 trial races for the $804,150 Remington Park Futurity. He watched it hold up as the fastest time of the night.
The five fastest qualifiers from Thursday night will join the five fastest from Friday night’s 10 trials to run in the restricted Grade 1 Remington Park Futurity final set for Saturday, April 22. The race is restricted to Oklahoma-bred 2-year-old American Quarter Horses, who will run 330 yards in the final.
JB Kool Jess, a 2-year-old sorrel colt by Mr Jess Perry, out of the Corona Cartel mare Paint Your Face, broke his maiden at Remington Park on March 19, winning by three-quarters of a length. Jockey Gaspar Garcia took over the reins after the colt’s first win and booted him home to the impressive win for trainer Raul Rodriguez and owner Priscilla Yvette Arredondo of Waxahachie, Texas.
It was a fair night of racing for trials as the wind was not a factor from first race to last. Unfortunately for the second-place finisher of race one, Lady Corona 123, she also held on the entire race card in the top five until the final race of the night when the winner, As Moonflash, and the runner-up, MH Tres Bird, had fast enough times to qualify for the finals. That knocked out Lady Corona 123 and Dezigner Jeanz from the finals.
JB Kool Jess was regally bred top and bottom in his pedigree as he is a son of Champion Mr Jess Perry with Corona Cartel on the dam side. Mr Jess Perry is a champion sire, listed as the No. 3 all-time leading sire of money earners, he also was a champion on the racetrack. He won 12-of-21 races lifetime for $687,184 in earnings. He stood at stud for Four Sixes Ranch in Texas until his passing in 2017. Mr Jess Perry was named American Quarter Horse Association World Champion 2-year-old and Champion 2-year-old colt in 1994.
According to the Four Sixes Ranch website, Mr Jess Perry sired runners that earned almost $60 million.
JB Kool Jess’ dam (mother), Paint Your Face was unraced but the broodmare sire Corona Cartel was a monster on the track, earning $557,142, winning 6-of-14, including the Grade 1, $1,055,000 Los Alamitos Futurity in California. It’s no wonder JB Kool Jess has some talent.
The following were the five fastest qualifiers with times from Thursday, speed index, race number, jockey and trainer. The five fastest from the April 7 trials will join these five for the finals:
2) As Moonflash, :16.750, 92, trial 10, Jesus Salazar, Cristian Alcala
3) Dark Nme, :16.859, 89, trial nine, Francisco Ramirez, Jr., Santos Carrizales
4) Hamlyn, :16.888, 88, trial three, Edwin Escobedo, Jason Olmstead
5) MH Tres Bird, :16.890, 88, trial 10, Jimmy Brooks, Eddie Willis
Live racing continues Friday and Saturday, April 6-7 with the first race nightly at 6pm-Central. Remington Park will not have a live racing program on Easter Sunday.
