FANCY SCARFACE MADE 5-2 MORNING LINE FAVORITE FOR HISTORIC $440,800 OKLAHOMA FUTURITY AT REMINGTON PARK

OKLAHOMA CITY, OK – March 18, 2022 – Fancy Scarface wasn’t the fastest qualifier for the Grade 2, $440,800 Oklahoma Futurity on Saturday, but his win in the trials was by far the most impressive visually.

The 2-year-old gelded son of PYC Fun N Fancy, from the Walk Thru Fire mare Dolls in Fire, was made the 5-2 morning-line favorite for the finals. He won his trial easily by a full two lengths in stopping the timer for 300 yards in :15.339. Rito Sosa of Blanchard, Okla., owns this gelding, who is trained by Santos Carrizales and will once again be ridden by Juan Pulido. Fancy Scarface was bred in Oklahoma by his owner.

Jessa Beast was the fastest qualifier for the finals in a time of :15.323, only 16-thousandths of a second faster than Fancy Scarface. Both got speed indexes of 94 in their trials. Jessa Beast is a 2-year-old colt by Mr Jess Perry, out of the Corona Cartel mare Famous Corona Lady, trained by Trey Wood. He is owned by Newman Cattle Company (Thomas R. Newman) of Stanton, Texas. Once again, Raul Ramirez Jr. gets the call to ride this beast. Jessa Beast was bred in Louisiana by Grant Farms and is the second morning-line favorite at 7-2 odds.

The trials were something of an oddity as the weather changed drastically late in the card on March 5, favoring the horses running in trials 9-12. Eight of the 10 qualifiers came from those last four trials. Only two horses qualified from the earlier races, 1-8. That is why it is no surprise that the third morning-line favorite, at 9-2 odds, is Ricanelo even though he was the 10th-fastest qualifier. This beautiful gray gelding’s time was only :15.599 with a speed index of 85, but he won his trial with an 11-mph headwind in the fourth trial. The fastest qualifier performed with a 12-mph tailwind.

Ricanelo was the highest-priced purchase among these 10 juveniles, going for $90,000 at the Ruidoso New Mexico Bred Quarter Horse Yearling Sale in 2021. He is owned by Gene and Tod Bradley of Dimmitt, Texas. Tanner Thedford will get a leg up from  trainer Trey Wood. He was bred in New Mexico by Mikkelson Racing.

The only other horse to qualify for the finals from the early trials with a headwind was Southern Seis. She could be a live longshot at 8-1 odds on the morning-line. She had the sixth-fastest qualifying time of :15.523 and an 85 speed index, a faster time than Ricanelo. She is a daughter of Tres Seis, out of the Mr Jess Perry mare Southern Miss. This filly is owned by Zareth Juarez of Litchfield, Ill. Jockey Roman Cruz rides for trainer Jose Huerta.

The fourth morning line favorite is Tres Crystals, who won his trial by 1-1/4 lengths with a tailwind of 12 mph. This gelding by Tres Seis, out of the Walk Thru Fire mare Crystal Sola, scored with an 82 speed index has been made 6-1. He is owned by Elizabeth Logan of Haskell, Okla., trained by Dee Keener and will be ridden by Bryan Candanosa.
