EYE WORK FOR YOU WINS $891,900 REMINGTON PARK FUTURITY WITH JOCKEY JAMES FLORES UP
OKLAHOMA CITY – April 19, 2020 – Jockey James Flores won the $3 million All American Futurity with Mr Jess Jenkins last year, and after winning Saturday night’s restricted Grade 1, $891,900 Remington Park Futurity with Eye Work for You, he feels he has another big horse.
“To be honest with you, when I rode this horse on the farm last winter, I knew we really had something on our hands,” said Flores. “He was really fast and really professional.”
Eye Work for You won his third in a row this season, to remain undefeated in his young career. The 2-year-old gelded son of Coronas Leaving You, out of the Mr Eye Opener mare Eye Love It, is trained by Marcos Carrizales, who coincidentally trains last year’s All American winner Mr Jess Jenkins.
“I think this horse is paid into the All American,” said Flores. “Having him under me is a similar feeling to Mr Jess Jenkins. I don’t know. He’s getting there.”
Eye Work for You is owned by Jose E. Guzman of Donna, Texas, and was bred in Oklahoma by Jose Acosta.
Eye Work for You went off the second betting choice at 2-1 odds and ran the 330 yards in :16.908 over the fast track for an 87 speed index. He was a nose in front at the wire as runner-up Dangerous Cartel (32-1) beat the third horse, Jess Is the Boss (6-1) by a neck. The 6-5 wagering favorite, and fastest overall qualifier in the trials, Dalts Fancy Pistol, could only beat two horses in the field of nine horses. Apollitical Gold scratched from the race.
Eye Work for You paid $6.60, $4.20 and $3.20 to win, place and show.
Carrizales’ and Flores’ families raced together when they were youngsters and now the circle has come full with Flores riding for Carrizales.
“Marcos’ dad, Santos, used to be our jockey back at the bush tracks in the Rio Grande Valley of South Texas,” said Flores. “Now I’ve been riding for Marcos for a couple of years. Funny how things work.”
As far as Flores’ thoughts coming into the race after Dalts Fancy Pistol had such a fast time in the trials?
“I thought it would be a horse race,” said Flores. “Guillermo (Valdivia, trainer of Dalts Fancy Pistol) is such a super horseman and is having a great meet.”
It was the second time Flores had won the Remington Park Futurity, also taking the trophy in 2017 aboard La Vencedora. It was the first win in this race for Carrizales and Guzman.
The Remington Park Futurity is restricted to eligible Oklahoma-bred 2-year-olds.
Racing is scheduled to continue, with no public spectators, with Sunday’s 10-race card on tap with a new post time of 6 p.m. (Central) for the first race.
