EYE ON THE CARD BRINGS HOME TROPHY IN FL LADY BUG STAKES FOR LEADING TRAINER SANTOS CARRIZALES

OKLAHOMA CITY, May 22, 2022 – After winning the restricted Grade 3, $73,700 FL Lady Bug Stakes on Saturday at Remington Park, Eye on the Card might have been undefeated after three starts if not for his stablemates.

This 2-year-old colt out of leading trainer Santos Carrizales’ barn won his career debut in style by 2-1/4 lengths against maidens on March 17. He might have stayed undefeated after his second start, but Carrizales emptied the barn and ran 1-2-3 in the $974,000 Remington Park Futurity and Eye On the Card finished third to stablemates San Lorenzo Ivory and PYC Avenue. He was just a half-length behind those two that dead-heated for that stakes win. Eye On the Card didn’t have to face them again Saturday in the FL Lady Bug and he finished a full length ahead of another stakes winner, Relentless Scorpion (4-1). That filly came into this race off a win in the $68,000 Laico Bird Stakes here and was charging hard at the end.

Eye On the Card was made the 3-5 odds-on favorite for the FL Lady Bug and returned $3.20 to win, $2.60 to place and $2.10 to show to his backers. Relentless Scorpion passed Cuz He Gone in the final stages for the place. She was a neck better than that gelding.

Pulido, last year’s top jockey at Remington Park, has been nursing an injured hand for a couple of weeks, riding fewer horses than he normally would, but moved back into second place by himself with his 30^th win of the meet, breaking a 29-29 tie with Justine Klaiber. Leading rider Francisco Calderon solidified his lead with three wins on Saturday for a total of 38 with four race days remaining.

Pulido was a man of few words after the big victory.

“He left (the gate) all right and got his nose down (at the wire) for me,” he said.

Carrizales’ win, his first in this stakes series, gave him 34 wins for the meet, five ahead of 12-time Remington Park training title holder Eddie Willis at 29. It was the first win in the FL Lady Bug for all the connections.

Eye On the Card is owned by Omar Hernandez of Idaho Falls, Idaho, and was bred in Oklahoma by Efrain Mendez. He earned $41,820 for Hernandez and the young colt has now had three starts, two wins and one third for a total of $157,761 banked.

Running time for the 330 yards over the fast track for the winner was :16.376 for a blazing 105 speed index.

FL Lady Bug was a prominent broodmare and American Quarter Horse Association Hall of Famer inductee. She was campaigned and owned by Hall of Fame owners and breeders Marvin and Lela Barnes of Ada, Okla.
