DASHING MOVEMENT MADE 7-2 MORNING-LINE FAVORITE IN WIDE OPEN OKLAHOMA DERBY AT REMINGTON PARK SATURDAY
OKLAHOMA CITY, OK – March 18, 2022 – There were only four points difference in the speed index between the fastest qualifier and the 10th-fastest qualifier for the finals of the Grade 3, $262,700 Oklahoma Derby on Saturday night at Remington Park. Therefore, it’s not that big a surprise that Dashing Movement was made the 7-2 morning-line favorite in this wide open field.
Dashing Movement (94 speed index in trials) may have been the ninth-fastest qualifier in the trials on March 6, but was sent off as the 2-5 favorite in his trial event for a trainer who has been winning at a 50-percent clip at Remington Park this meet, Santos Carrizales, Jr. Last year’s riding title winner Juan Pulido gets the return call in the finals. Dashing Movement was a neck away from winning the $415,000 Dash For Cash Futurity at Lone Star Park over a sloppy track on Oct. 2, 2021 in Grand Prairie, Texas, finishing third.
Last summer as a 2-year-old, this 3-year-old gelded son of A Dashing Valentine, out of the Sixes Royal mare Seis of Hearts, won the Gillespie County Fair Firecracker Futurity in Texas on the Fourth of July. In 2022, the Carrizales barn has made it to the winner’s circle in 10-of-19 starts, according to Equibase statistics. Dashing Movement is owned by Josefina Guzman of Dallas. He was bred in Texas by Minne De Leon.
Trainer Trey Wood has the second favorite in the morning line, the fourth-fastest qualifier, Revenant Moon (95 speed index in trials) at 4-1 odds. That filly by A Revenant, out of the FDD Dynasty mare Sochi Moon, was the winner of the $477,000 Oklahoma Futurity at Remington Park last year. She also is the top earner in the field with a bankroll of $226,346. Tanner Thedford will get a leg up from Wood. She is owned by Trey Odom, Scott Bryant and Norman W. Allen of Ropesville, Texas. She was bred in New Mexico by Dosi or Norma Alvarez.
Twelve-time Remington Park training-title winner Eddie Willis had the fastest qualifier during trials, Famous Coronas (97 speed index) and will try to win this 350-yard race under jockey Justine Klaiber. This 3-year-old gelding has not won in stakes or finals company yet, but ran second, beaten only a neck in the $84,000 Juvenile Challenge at Ruidoso Downs in New Mexico last summer. He is owned by Zynda Racing (Thomas Zynda) of Anadarko, Okla. This gelding was bred in Texas by Johnny Trotter.
Famous Coronas may have been aided to the fastest time by a toad-strangler of a rainstorm that hit Oklahoma City just before his trial. The track then turned super-fast for the final four trials. Four of the final 10 horses qualified out of Famous Coronas’ heat. Famous Coronas has been established as the 9-2 third favorite in the morning line.
All Pointz Bulletin sits at 5-1 in the line for owner Dunn Ranch (Matt Dunn) of Wynnewood, Okla., trainer Monty Arrossa and jockey Francisco Calderon is up.
The field for the Oklahoma Derby with post position, horse, odds, jockey and trainer:
Jesst for Speed, 10-1, Gonzalo Gutierrez, Mallory Norton
Famous Coronas, 9-2, Justine Klaiber, Eddie Willis
Saints New Weapon, 15-1, Cristian Esqueda, Ed Hardy
Five Bar Barbie, 6-1, Eugenio Navarrete, Stacy Charette-Hill
If U Could See Me, 15-1, Mario Delgado, Salimm Hernandez
All Pointz Bulletin, 5-1, Francisco Calderon, Monty Arrossa
Freighttrain King, 15-1, Daniel Torres, Shawna Manriquez
Valerity, 20-1, Paul Nieto, Jesus Ruiz
Revenant Moon, 4-1, Tanner Thedford, Trey Wood
Dashing Movement, 7-2, Juan Pulido, Santos Carrizales, Jr.
The Oklahoma Derby will be the 10th of 12 races on rich night of racing Saturday at Remington Park as purses soar higher than $1.2 million.
Remington Park racing begins at 6pm on Friday and Saturday, March 18-19. The action begins at 4pm on Sunday, March 20.
