CREAM RISES TO TOP IN GRADE 1 AMERICAN PAINT CLASSIC FUTURITY AS LEADING TRAINER TAKES WIN WITH THE OSC GOLDENBOY

by Richard Linihan

OKLAHOMA CITY, OK – April 30, 2022 – Livewires Turnpike won his trial for the finals of the Grade 1 $153,000 American Paint Classic Futurity, beating The OSC Goldenboy’s time by three-tenths of a second, but the tables were turned Saturday night at Remington Park.

The OSC Goldenboy blasted out of the gate on top, looking like an Olympic sprinter with feet afire, never looking back under jockey Francisco Calderon, who was sitting in for injured leading jockey Juan Pulido. It was such a blazing exposition that The OSC Goldenboy set the track record at 330 yards for the Paint breed with his effort. He hit the wire in a time of :16.563 over the fast track, beating the old mark of :16.602 set by Ms Flashy Dancer on April 24, 2014. The OSC Goldenboy earned a speed index of 98 for the effort.

The jockey change was made shortly after the start of the Saturday card as Pulido was named to ride the winner at the time of entry. Pulido returned to action after more than a week off, due to a hand injury. While he rode the winner in the first race of the night, RT Country Gold, trained by the leading conditioner this meet, Santos Carrizales, Jr. who also trains The OSC Goldenboy, After winning the first race, Pulido didn’t believe he was 100-percent over his hand injury. The leading jockey of the season opted to take off his stakes mounts, letting Carrizales give a leg up to Calderon instead.

Carrizales had The OSC Goldenboy ready for the revenge match with Livewires Turnpike. This 2-year-old gelded Paint son of CRM Livewire, out of the First Smart Money mare, was much the best on this night, winning by a clear 1-1/2 lengths. Livewires Turnpike broke poorly in the final, getting out of the gate eighth but he did make a huge run late to get up for third, a nose behind Hold My Beer who was second.

“I give all the credit to Juan Pulido and the Carrizales crew,” said Calderon. “I knew as long as I could hang on to him, they weren’t going to catch him as great as he left there (the gate).”

The OSC Goldenboy went off at 2-1 odds and paid $6.60 to win, $3.60 to place and $2.40 to show. Livewires Turnpike was the prohibitive 3-5 favorite at post time and Hold My Beer was at 9-1.

The OSC Goldenboy earned $58,140 for the victory and improved his young career record to four starts, two wins and two seconds for a total bankroll of $103,025, all accumulated this season at Remington Park. This was the first win in the American Paint Classic for all of the connections of The OSC Goldenboy.

The remaining order of finish in the American Paint Classic was RP Barracuda Dash (4th), WL Van Halen (5th), Memories of PYC (6th), Secret Mystic Lady (7th), Turnpikes Peanut (8th), U Know Im Kool (9th) and RP Dirty Barracuda who was declared a non-starter.

There was one mishap in the race that brought an inquiry from the Oklahoma Horse Racing Commission stewards. The No. 9 horse, RP Dirty Barracuda, broke through her gate a split second early after being restless before the start. The stewards ruled that she would be declared a non-starter and all wagers made on her or that included her would be refunded.

Remington Park racing continues Sunday, May 1 with a 10-race card that begins at 4 p.m.
