CHARLIES FURY WINS FIFTH STAKES RACE OF HIS CAREER, TAKING MR JET MOORE STAKES AT REMINGTON PARK
OKLAHOMA CITY, OK – April 1, 2022 – Jockey Agustin Silva fell back on his old bag of tricks, getting Charlies Fury to the winner’s line first in the restricted Grade 2, $68,000 Mr Jet Moore Stakes on Thursday night at Remington Park.
“I just close my eyes and Charlie does the rest,” Silva joked. “He’s awesome.”
The 6-year-old gelding by Furyofthewind, out of the Take Off Jess mare Jess Charlena, also gained some revenge on JC Wild King. The 4-5 post-time favorite who had just beaten Charlies Fury in the Mighty Deck Three Stakes at Remington Park on March 4 at the much shorter distance of 250 yards. Charlie enjoyed stretching out to 350 yards and held on to beat that horse by a neck in the end.
It was the fifth stakes win in Charlie’s career as the big sorrel star of trainer Michelle Hurdle’s barn broke like a shot out of the gate under Silva and just kept hitting on all cylinders. He won as the 5-2 second favorite in the race and paid $7.60, $3.20 and $2.10 across the board to win, place and show.
Charlie won $40,200 for owners Tom and Kathleen McNally of Guthrie, Okla., from the purse and improved his lifetime record to 27 starts, 11 wins, seven seconds and five thirds for a bankroll of $405,801. He was bred in Oklahoma by his owners.
“He’s the favorite in the barn,” said Hurdle. “That’s what we call him. I just love him.”
Charlie stopped the timer in a time of :17.478 over the fast track for a speed index of 94. Behind JC Wild King was My Midnight Candy (3-1) another neck back of the runner-up.
Previously, Charlie had won the Grade 2, $50,000 Bob Moore Memorial Stakes here on April 17, 2021. Basically, just name a stakes after anything Moore and he is good to go. He won three other stakes races at Will Rogers Downs in Claremore, Okla. – the OQHRA Fall Classic Stakes twice in the past two years and the Will Rogers Derby Challenge Stakes as a 3-year-old on Sept. 22, 2019.
The win in the Mr Jet Moore Stakes was the first for all his connections. It was also Charlie’s third win in his last four races, and fifth trip to the winner’s circle in his last seven races. At Remington Park, Charlie has now won 7-of-16 starts for $241,949.
The Mr Jet Moore Stakes is named in honor of the 1972 American Quarter Horse Association World Champion who was bred in Oklahoma by the late Bob Moore. Among his many accomplishments, Mr Jet Moore won the inaugural Champion of Champions race at Los Alamitos in Southern California in 1972. The race is the richest event for older Quarter Horses in North America.
Live racing continues Friday and Saturday night at 6 p.m. with 11 trials on tap each night for 2-year-old Oklahoma-bred Quarter Horses trying to qualify for the finals of the restricted Grade 1, $973,665 Remington Park Futurity that will be run on Saturday, April 16. The top five fastest times from each night will qualify as the 10 finalists.
