CHARLIES FURY GIVES JOCKEY AGUSTIN SILVA LATE DAILY DOUBLE WITH WIN IN BOB MOORE MEMORIAL STAKES
OKLAHOMA CITY, OK – April 18, 2021 – Jockey Agustin Silva scarfed down the main course on the racing menu Saturday night, winning the $926,500 Remington Park Futurity in the 11th race, but he wasn’t satisfied. He then gulped down the dessert, taking the 12th race aboard Charlies Fury in the $55,680 Bob Moore Memorial Stakes.
Charlies Fury had opened some eyes wide in previous races in Oklahoma City but had never won a stakes race here. He qualified for the Remington Park Derby as the third fastest qualifier on April 7, 2019, as a 3-year-old, but was unable to race in the finals due to a minor bleeding problem in that race. He then ran the fastest time of any qualifier in the Grade 2, $367,750 Heritage Place Derby, but could only run third in the finals.
Owners Tom and Kathleen McNally of Guthrie, Okla., finally got to see their 5-year-old gelding have his picture taken after a stakes race when Charlies Fury flew up the rail from the post-position one in Saturday night’s victory. The win was only by a head over runner-up Apollitical Papa (10-1 odds), who beat third-place finisher Uncurled Fist (9-1) by a half-length.
Charlies Fury was bet to 3-1 odds by post-time, the second favorite in the field and paid $8.40 to win, $4.60 to place and $3.40 to show. The 5-2 wagering favorite, CERs Final Try, finished a disappointing seventh. Others in the order of finish included: Jess Sumokin Hot (4th), Kiss Me Anywhere (5th), Ferrari James (6th), Marfilmio (8th), Uncle Eds Idea (9th), Zoomn On Bye (10th), Marcus Medallion (11th) and Industrious (12th).
Charlies Fury, a gelded son of Furyofthewind, out of the Take Off Jess mare Jess Charlena, is trained by Michelle Hurdle. He was bred in Oklahoma by his owners. This was the first win in the Bob Moore Memorial for all of the connections.
Charlies Fury crossed the finish line for the 300-yard sprint in :15.258 over a fast track, good enough for a 95 speed index. Charlies Fury earned $34,422 for winning and improved his lifetime record to 21 starts, seven wins, seven seconds and four thirds for earnings of $314,761.
Charlies Fury is now a four-time stakes winner, winning three others at Will Rogers Downs in Claremore, Okla. His first stakes victory came in the $267,000 Black Gold Futurity in 2018 as a 2-year-old, followed by a win in the Derby Challenge, and then once more in a small stake at WRD in November last winter.
The Bob Moore Memorial is named in honor of the Hall of Fame horseman who was prominent in American Quarter Horse racing for over four decades, operating from his Norman, Okla. farm.
Remington Park racing continues on Sunday, April 18, with the first of 11 events at 6pm-Central.
