AS MOONFLASH, DAUGHTER OF MULTIPLE STAKES WINNER AS AND JS, FASTEST TRAINING RACE WINNER WEDNESDAY AT REMINGTON PARK
OKLAHOMA CITY, OK – February 15, 2023 – Bloodlines ran true during Remington Park’s 10 training races on Wednesday for 2-year-old American Quarter Horses and Paints & Appaloosas as AS Moonflash, a daughter of multiple stakes-winning broodmare As and Js, scored the fastest time of the day.
AS Moonflash, a 2-year-old quarter horse filly by First Moonflash, out of the Apollitical Jess mare As and Js, under jockey Noe Garcia, Jr., ran a lot like her mama in her first official try over a racetrack for first-year trainer Cristian Alcala. She stopped the timer for 250 yards at :13.625 over a fast surface, good enough for an 80-speed index. The filly raced with a 9-mph tailwind on a beautiful day. It was 61 degrees in the 10th race, the one AS Moonflash won.
“We bought As and Js for $11,000 at the Heritage Place Sale in 2014,” said Alcala, who has helped his dad, trainer Leo Alcala, his entire life but is jumping in full blast as an official trainer this year. “This is the first filly to hit the track for As and Js. She should be a good one with all the class in her breeding.”
Leo Alcala is the owner and breeder of AS Moonflash, an Oklahoma-bred.
Top and bottom, AS Moonflash is bred regally in the Quarter Horse genre. As and Js won 7-of-24 starts lifetime for $531,134 in earnings and won at least one stakes race every year from 2016-2019 and ran second in a Grade 1 stakes at Los Alamitos in California in her final career race in 2020. Among her stakes victories were the Easy Date Stakes in 2018 at Remington Park and the Grade 2 Junos Request Stakes in 2019, also in Oklahoma City.
AS Moonflash, on the top side of her pedigree is as much a blue-blood. Her sire (dad), First Moonflash won 14-of-25 starts lifetime and was so close to retiring a millionaire. He won $969,828 in his race days on the track. He was a multiple Grade 1 stakes winner in his career, winning seven including the last three races of his career. One generation further back, As and Js’ sire was Apollitical Jess. All he has done is produce three All American Futurity winners.
Garcia got AS Moonflash out of the gate in a hurry and she raced second halfway down the stretch before taking over and pulling away at the wire, without much urging. Shaydom ran a good race for second, and was well ahead of third-place finisher Rider Stone. The top three speed indexes in that final race were 80, 77 and 67.
The other training race winners (Quarter Horses unless otherwise noted), their times (in order from fastest to slowest winners), speed index, trainers and race number were:
Jess A Livewire (Paint), :13.625, 78, Clint Crawford, race two
Im Passing B, :13.824, 70, Jorge Gonzalez, race six
Apolliticalady, :13.865, 69, Shawna Manriquez, race one
JR Cash Blue, :13.930, 66, Cosme Velasquez, race five
Timothy, :13.956, 65, Troy Carter, race four
Lets Go Rip, :14.137, 58, Dee Keener, race nine
The 2023 Remington Park American Quarter Horse, Paint and Appaloosa Season will begin on March 9.
