WYNNCHESTER PULLS OFF MINOR UPSET OVER HANDIN OUT CANDY IN REMINGTON PARK DISTANCE CHAMPIONSHIP
by Richard Linihan
OKLAHOMA CITY, OK – May 31, 2026 – It was a Champions Night where the mighty fell hard with one undefeated horse tasting defeat for the first time after five starts and then Wynnchester pulled off the mild upset of Handin Out Candy in the Grade 1, $50,240 Remington Park Distance Championship at 870 yards.
Handin Out Candy (6-5 second wagering favorite) had won seven races in a row and nine of his last 10 starts, eight of those at 870 yards around the turn. Despite those impressive statistics from this multiple graded-stakes winner and American Quarter Horse Association Champions Distance Horse of 2025, Wynnchester got all the late money in the betting and eventually went off as the even-money favorite, even after losing to Handin Out Candy last time out.
Wynnchester shot from the gate like there was sweet feed at the finish line, under jockey Mario Delgado, and never looked back, stopping the timer in :44.631 over the fast track for a speed index of 103. Handin Out Candy did get up for second, 3-3/4 lengths back and another full length ahead of third-place finisher FL Rizzo (29-1). The field was scratched down to six horses after O Donovan Rossa and Mister Lights Out were declared from the race early on. The rest of the order of finish was Rock Ya Later (31-1) fourth, Cash Back Hero (6-1) fifth, and Into the Lite (9-1) sixth.
Wynnchester, a 5-year-old Texas-bred gelded son of Favorite Cartel, out of the FDD Dynasty mare Nellie Delaney, won for only the second time in nine tries at 870 yards. He had run second to Handin Out Candy, beaten three-quarters of a length in the previous race, the Grade 2, $50,000 Pauls Valley Stakes at Remington Park. Wynnchester’s only other win around the hook came at Will Rogers Downs in Claremore, Okla., in a distance challenge stakes there on Sept. 28, 2025. This was Wynnchester’s first win in seven attempts at Remington Park.
Wynnchester earned $29,700 from the purse Saturday for owner Lucky Ladies of Asher, Okla., and improved to 20 starts, four wins, three seconds and five thirds for a lifetime bankroll of $107,743. He was bred by Bobby D. Cox in Texas and purchased from the Ruidoso Select Yearling Sale of 2022 for $90,000. It was the first win in this stakes series for all the connections of Wynnchester.
