BP HAIL MARY GIVES LEADING TRAINER DEE KEENER HIS FIRST VICTORY IN LAICO BIRD STAKES
by Richard Linihan
OKLAHOMA CITY, OK – April 20, 2025 – BP Hail Mary gave leading trainer Dee Keener a thrill in the $75,000 Laico Bird Stakes as this 2-year-old Oklahoma-bred filly got her head in front at the finish line for a hard-fought win on Saturday at Remington Park.
With jockey Jesus Ayala in the saddle, this daughter of Corona Cartel, out of the Tempting Dash mare HF Stormi Daniels, took them gate to wire in the 330-yard race, winning this race for the first time for all connections. Owner-breeder Bill Price pocketed $42,525 for the trip to the winner’s circle and he saw his filly win for the second time in three starts this season.
This is the first win in the Laico Bird Stakes for all the connections of BP Hail Mary.
BP Hail Mary tried to qualify for the Oklahoma Futurity in trials on March 8, but ran second, missing out on that final. She came right back in a maiden race for open company and won by three-quarters of a length. Ayala has been in the irons for this filly in all three attempts.
With her second win in a row, BP Hail Mary improved her record to three starts, two wins and one second for $56,336 in earnings.
Ding Dang Dulce (4-1) got up for second, another neck ahead of third-place finisher Godz Speed, the 9-5 wagering favorite.
BP Hail Mary finished the race in a time of :16.963 seconds, earning a speed index of 84 over the sloppy track. She was sent off as the 5-2 second betting favorite and paid $7.60 to win, $3.80 to place and $2.40 to show. Behind the top three finishers, the rest of the order of finish was DR Americas Dynasty (9-2) fourth, Apolitical Valor (18-1) fifth, Pevs Candy P (19-1) sixth, Maxximum George (16-1) seventh, T Bar Fabulous Eagle (17-1) eighth, Tess Me Jessie (24-1) ninth. BV Shotgun Kelly was declared a non-starter in the race by the stewards after an inquiry.
The Laico Bird Stakes is named after the 1967 All American Futurity winner and American Quarter Horse Association World Champion who was bred in Oklahoma and campaigned over her career by Jimmy Jones, of Norman, Okla.

🏅OQRHA Hall of Fame Inductee - JD Anderson🏅
JD Anderson has spent more than sixty years in the horse business, and at eighty-nine years old he is still training. He grew up in Oklahoma, where his father ran horses on bush tracks across the state, and he learned the work from the ground up. His family raced multiple breeds, and that carried on to his own career as he trained Quarter Horses, Paints and Appaloosas with equal skill.
JD became known for his steady approach and the pride he took in prepping a horse the right way. He established long-standing relationships with owners and built a record that earned respect across the region. In 1992 he was the leading Quarter Horse trainer at Blue Ribbon Downs, and he raced at every major Oklahoma track during his long career, as well as several tracks throughout surrounding states.
Beyond his work on the racetrack, JD played an important part in helping bring pari-mutuel racing to Oklahoma. He was active in the early formation of the Oklahoma Quarter Horse Racing Association and worked alongside other horsemen to support the growth of the industry.
His induction reflects a career built on consistency, experience and genuine dedication to Oklahoma racing. Few have stayed the course as long as JD, and his place in the Hall of Fame is well earned. ... ’Expand’See Less
