EYESA FREIGHTTRAIN B OUTNODS STABLEMATE TO WIN PHOTO IN OKLAHOMA DERBY UNDER JOCKEY JAMES FLORES
by Richard Linihan
OKLAHOMA CITY, OK – March 23, 2024 – Jockey James Flores won his third Oklahoma Derby to move into a first-place tie with Jimmy brooks for most wins in this race as Eyesa Freighttrain B put him in that position with the victory.
The winner edged out his stablemate, B Second Cowboy, just snatching victory from the runner-up at the wire. The photo showed Eyesa Freighttrain B was the winner of the $217,678 Derby by a head at 4-1 odds. It was the first win in the Oklahoma Derby for trainer Mauricio Lopez and owner Party Tyme Racing of Denham Springs, La. They earned $87,071 from the purse while Eyesa Freighttrain B improved lifetime to 10 starts, five wins and three seconds for a bankroll of $605,449. In fact, Party Tyme Racing owned the two that had to be separated by a photo and took home a total of $124,076 thanks to the efforts of the top pair.
“I knew he was talented and we’re trying to prove him as a stud,” said Lopez. “He made a half-million last year as a 2-year-old and he’s still a colt. I would like to thank the Lord and my brother Pepe. Our whole crew is one big family.”
Coincidentally, Jimmy Brooks won his first Oklahoma Derby aboard this winner’s sire (dad) Freighttrain B in 2011 and then followed that with trips to the winner’s circle behind big runs from One Valiant Hero (2014) and Love Is Everything V (2020).
Eyesa Freighttrain B covered the 350 yards in a time of :17.648 on the fast track for a 90 speed-index. Flores was thrilled to ride this horse for the first time.
“I just want to thank the connections for giving me this opportunity,” he said. “I really had to reach and snatch him up when he changed leads because he was starting to drift out.”
Eyesa Freighttrain B was the third favorite on the board at 4-1 odds and he returned $10.20 to win, $4.80 to place and $2.80 to show.
B Second Cowboy (9-5 favorite) was second, three-quarters of a length ahead of third-place finisher Fire Eat N Cowboy (5-2). They were followed by Nims B (13-1) fourth, JC Prince of Torts (17-1) fifth, Thunder Cartel (9-1) sixth, Midnight Ryde (26-1) seventh, Reason to Remember (22-1) eighth, JMG One Hott Eagle (26-1) ninth and Apollitical Whiplash (9-1) 10th.
