CLAREMORE, Okla. – Cherokee Casino Will Rogers Downs is coming off a solid opening weekend of the fall live racing meet, and the action continues Friday through Sunday.

One of the biggest highlights of this weekend’s races is the American Quarter Horse Association John Deere Juvenile Challenge Trials for 2-year-olds. The finals for the John Deere will run Oct. 9, as part of a racing schedule that also features the AQHA Adequan Derby Challenge Finals and the AQHA Red Cell Distance Challenge Finals.

Sunday’s action includes the Charlie Claborn Memorial, which is a $22,000 guaranteed quarter horse race for fillies and mares that are three years and older.

“We’re really looking forward to all the races this weekend, but the trials and the Charlie Claborn Memorial will be a lot of fun to watch because there is so much competition and talent on the track in each race,” said Kelly Cathey, racing secretary for Cherokee Casino Will Rogers Downs. “Also, the weather looks like it’s going to be perfect to sit outside and watch all the races each day.”

In the biggest race of opening weekend, Makin Wakes and jockey Debbie Freeman capitalized on a strong finishing drive to win the Black Gold Division II Futurity Finals. The duo earned $29,469 in winnings in race with a purse of $95,000.

For those looking for excitement between live racing, the Downs is also the place for simulcast wagering, with more than 100 television screens airing races from across the country in spacious viewing rooms.

Throughout the fall, racing fans can stay late and enjoy numerous free concerts, including country star Joe Diffie on Oct. 1. The Dog Iron Saloon will also show all the biggest NCAA and NFL games on multiple screens.

Beginning Thursday, Will Rogers Downs will feature 28 days of quarter horse, Appaloosa and Paint races through Nov. 14. Following this week, racing will be every Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

“The stakes races we’re hosting are loaded with a lot of talented horses and jockeys, which means they will be very competitive and a lot of fun to watch,” Cathey said. “There is more than $1 million being awarded in all of our stakes this fall, which brings a lot of attention from horsemen all over the region.”

The Downs is also the place for pari-mutuel wagering, with more than 100 television screens airing racing in spacious simulcast viewing rooms.
